This work studies character delineation in Chinua Achebe’s novels. The researcher agrees that characterization is one of the most important elements of fiction because no novelist can effectively pass across his message to his audience if not through the characters he creats. One’s ability to write an acceptable novel depends largely on his ability to create credible characters. Achebe has always been the African leading novelist partly because of how superbly he invents and manipulates his characters. In writing this thesis, the researcher starts by discussing character and characterization existensively. Opinions of scholars on character/characterization are sought. The researcher also seeks opinions of scholars of Achebe’s method of characterization. Character delineation in the novel novels is equally copiously discussed. Finally, the researcher juxtaposes Achebe’s novels for the similarities and differences in the way he manipulates his characters to be seen.
